Fear and loathing on the O'Malley campaign trail

Martin, Martin. Surely this isn't the only way you can get attention.

Former Maryland governor and current Democratic presidential candidate Martin O'Malley teamed up with CNN to film a brief video in the Nevada desert that riffs on gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson's classic political reportage.

The not quite four-minute video -- with CNN's senior digital correspondent Chris Moody playing the role of Thompson -- combines elements of such Thompson touchstones as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" about chasing the American Dream through a drug-induced haze, and "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail," which chronicled the 1972 Democratic primary and the doomed campaign of George McGovern.

The video begins with Moody racing his red convertible through the desert, and then pulling over to pick up a suited, hitchhiking O'Malley. Moody offers him a beer and a hit of ether -- both of which the candidate declines. The two then discuss whether more states should legalize marijuana, the Democratic field and immigration.

This video is just the latest, err, unorthodox political move made by the candidate, who has been stuck at the bottom of recent political polls.
The Thompson homage appears just a few days before Tuesday's Democratic presidential debate, and three days after this Snapchat video started making the rounds of O'Malley reading his iPad while working out at the gym.
Last month, O'Malley attempted to "raise" campaign funds by standing outside on Wall Street, singing and playing his guitar. According to Time magazine, in an hour O'Malley made $1.74 and a pack of Gummy Bears.
It makes us wonder -- Martin, what will you do next?
On second thought, forget we asked.
