Move over, "Star Wars." Here are some action figures the whole family can get next to.
Several sets of figures evoking characters and scenes from John Waters' magnum opus "Female Trouble" (here's the film's NSFW theatrical trailer, for those who need a reminder of its greatness) have shown up on Instagram recently. They're the work of Tyson Tabbert, who put photos of them on his Instagram account. Tabbert is the "head sculptor" at New York's Asher Levine fashion house.
"I've always wanted to make toys based on some popular culture thing," says Tabbert. "The response has been pretty insane. I can't really keep up with my email, of people asking me about the set."
Tabbert's figures are not being marketed, so don't go looking to buy some as an early Valentine's Day present. But they're pretty impressive. There's a set of figures representing the terrible trio of Divine as Dawn Davenport, Susan Walsh and Cookie Mueller. There's also a re-creation of the (justly) infamous Christmas tree scene, in which Dawn pins her poor mother under the holiday decoration.
Waters has seen the figures, and is certainly a fan. "I think they are wonderful," he says. "He did a lovely job, and he's a great kid."
However, neither the figures' creator nor the man who inspired them foresees Divine, et. al. appearing on the retail market anytime soon. Clearing the rights to do so would be almost impossible, both agreed.
"Right now, it's just art, for my purposes only," says Tabbert.
Adds Waters: "To be honest, I don't think it's going to happen."
Still, one can dream. And we want one of these so bad.
"Sorry, not for purchase at this time," Tabbert responds to one similar plea on his Instagram account, "but stay tuned."
Meanwhile, in other John Waters news, the self-described "Smut Egghead" is hosting a second season of Playboy TV's "Groundbreakers," a series of adult-cinema classics that, in its inaugural season, featured such porn mainstays as "Deep Throat" and "The Devil in Miss Jones."
