An initiative at the Enoch Pratt Free Library this month will allow patrons to lower their library fines while also giving back to those in need.
Today through Jan. 31, library-goers will receive $1 off their library fines for every canned food item they donate. The program, called Food for Fines, is a partnership between Baltimore's public library system and the Maryland Food Bank.
Those who wish to participate can drop off the canned goods — which must be unopened and unexpired — at the circulation desk of any Pratt library branch. There is no limit to the number of cans that can be donated (and amount of fines to be waived).
Last year's Food for Fines initiative collected over 13,000 cans of food for the Maryland Food Bank, according to a news release.
