Visitors to zoo can see elephant bath time

Taking a bath in front of a crowd of onlookers might not be your thing, but the elephants at the Maryland Zoo probably won't mind when the new "bath time at the zoo" feature starts Wednesday.

Guests will get to see some of what goes into the care of the animals, including seeing them being cleaned and watching the keepers inspect their skin, ears, feet and trunks.

"These training sessions not only provide the opportunity for keepers to check the health and welfare of the elephants, they also serve to strengthen bonds between keepers and elephants," the zoo said in a statement. "Baths happen near the barn in the large exhibit yard and are best viewed from the Overlook. Keepers will also give guests a closer than usual view of elephants on the lower viewing area of the exhibit."

Check out the elephants' bath time daily at 11:30, weather permitting. There is no additional cost for the new feature. For more information, visit marylandzoo.org.
