LGBT-themed movies to catch at AFI Docs

The AFI's annual documentary film festival, previously known as Silver Docs, takes place in Downtown D.C. and at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring June 17-21. It features more than 40 full-length documentaries on such varied topics as the rise and fall of Tower Records ("All Things Must Pass"), Mexican drug cartels ("Cartel Land") and the history of National Lampoon ("Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead").

Here are some of the films showing that piqued our interests:

"From This Day Forward" – Director Sharon Shattuck's father came out as transgender while she was in middle school and her parents remained married even though her mother identifies as straight. This documentary captures Shattuck's return home in the days leading up to her own wedding as she explores her parents' enduring relationship.

Screens: June 18, 3:45 p.m., AFI Silver and June 19, 6:45 p.m., Landmark E. Street Cinema

"Larry Kramer In Love & Anger" – This HBO documentary profiles Larry Kramer, the often divisive gay rights activist and playwright, who helped to give a voice to a generation of American gay men and lesbians during the early years of the AIDS crisis. The documentary also looks at who Kramer is now, at 79 and battling his own health issues.

"Out to Win" – Malcolm Ingram's documentary looks at gay and lesbian athletes in the world of professional sports. Featuring interviews from such athletes as Jason Collins, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, the film illustrates some of the challenges such athletes have faced.
