BSO Gala

Kate Bent, 47, generally goes for a classic suited look in her job as assistant commissioner for compliance policy at the Food and Drug Administration. "In light of the ever-expanding range of imports and things we have to regulate, my staff and I spend a lot of time trying to help the FDA think in smarter ways about the risk that we face in our food and drug supply. So, I have to visit a lot of offices," said the Potomac resident, who holds a Ph.D. in nursing. But on her own time, Bent loves to have a little more fun with her style, as she did at the 2014 Gala for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, where her husband, Hilary Miller, is on the board of trustee's executive committee. Although the BSO's Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda is closer to her home, Bent said she and her husband love to come to Baltimore for BSO concerts. "We really love the opportunity to hear the orchestra in both halls. The sound is different in [each]. So, it's never the same show twice. We'll often see the same show in both places," she said. But the Meyerhoff isn't the only thing the couple enjoy while they're here. "Sometimes we'll come up for the matinee on Sunday, then go to Little Italy, Harbor East or one of the great museums," she said. "I love the feel of the urban neighborhoods that still have history. I love the sense of community here." HER STYLE: "Classic with an edge. ... Femininity combined with a little toughness. ... I feel like I can carry off the toughness because I'm pretty big (5 feet, 11-inches) so that fits naturally. But the femininity -- maybe that's the edge for me." HER ENSEMBLE: Patricia Gomez-Gracia gown with black leather top with black mesh cutout in front and black mesh back, and black, white and gold geometric brocade ballskirt from Gomez-Gracia boutique in Potomac. Crystal Art Deco chandelier earrings from Rent the Runway. Diamond bangles from India. Diamond ring that was made from her husband's grandmother's brooch and borrowed from her stepdaughter. Enzo Angiolini black patent leather ankle strap peep-toe heels from zappos.com. SOME FAVES: "I like leather; a leather jacket. I'm really comfortable in skinny jeans and a tuxedo jacket, and maybe a camisole top. The shoe boot, the ankle boots. They're a great classic trend. I'm really glad they're back." PEDAL PASSION: "My husband and I love to cycle. We ride road bikes with skinny tires. We try to ride 120 miles on the weekends, and we generally will try to ride 20 miles before work every day unless it's snowing, and then we go to spin class. We just returned from a seven-day cycling trip in Normandy and Brittany. ... It's very meditative. It's something we can do together. It's a real joy to have an athletic pursuit with your husband, the love of your life. You go to beautiful places, and it's easy on the joints."
