Taste for Life

Stephanie Covington, left and Stephanie Stevenson About 600 people mingled in the lobby of the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric for "Taste for Life," a fundraising gala for cancer research which is now in its 15th year. Patty Cutchis, event co-chair, had been at the helm for all of them. "Fifteen years ago, I was in a wine-tasting club. Four of the members were diagnosed with cancer within the realm of one year," she said. "So we wanted to do something for the American Cancer Society, and we dreamed this up." In those 15 years, Cutchis says, she's seen the summer Sunday afternoon soiree go from raising $15,000 for the ACS that first year to close to $130,000 this year. This was also Cutchis' last year organizing the $75- to $100-a-ticket party, which most definitely did not make this year's event bittersweet. "No, it's a very sweet event. For those of us on the committee, it's a lot of work, which I love. But I am very much looking forward to coming to the event and enjoying it the way everyone else is doing," she said with a smile.
