'The Vampire Diaries' recap: Why it was almost time to give up on the show

I almost quit watching this show tonight. And not just this episode but the entire "Vampire Diaries" series.
Why you ask? Because the writers almost killed off Alaric.
So back in her own body, Esther comes up with this plan for how to kill off her children and the entire vampire species. She decides to turn Alaric, while he’s really his evil alter ego, into a vampire. She believes his hatred of vampires will only intensify when he’s a vampire and he’ll become an unstoppable vampire hunter, just like her husband Michael (though he was obviously stopped!).
Seemingly, the plan has failed when Alaric, after having drank Elena’s blood and then being killed, awakes his good self and kills Esther. He decides he’s not going to complete the transition by feeding and instead locks himself in a tomb (or something of the like) to die.
But Esther appears to Bonnie in a dream and tells her that her sisters say she needs to finish the work she started.
Damon — who had decided to not let Alaric die alone and goes into the tomb and shares some final swigs of alcohol with him (they were always such great drinking buddies) — leaves because it seems Alaric is dead.

Then on his way out, he runs into Bonnie, who works her magic on him so he can’t stop her. Then, Bonnie goes into the tomb and forces Alaric to drink her blood, thus completing his transition.
The show ends with Alaric awakening, blood dripping down his mouth and the blood thirst marks under his eyes, holding the last white oak stake that Esther had earlier spelled to make indestructible so it can call all her original children.
And, of course, next episode the vampires will be trying to kill vampire Alaric. If they are successful, this seriously may be my last season watching "the Vampire Diaries" (unless next season they have Ian Somerhalder get naked more).
Other highlights from tonight’s episode:
Best Damon Quote(s): “I don’t know if right now is the best time for you to be going on a spirit quest Rick.”
Best Words Used to Stick it to Someone: After Damon tells Bonnie he didn’t have a choice but to kill her mother to save Elena, Bonnie says to him: “There’s always a choice. Whenever you make one, someone else suffers.”
Best Moment of Insight: “We’re strange bedfellows, you and I,” Klaus tells Stefan.
Most Awkward Moment: Bonnie making out with Jamie. I know they’re not related by blood, but her mother raised Jamie, so that essentially makes him her brother. Eww.

Most Romantic Moment:
Elena says: “I don’t have anyone anymore.” And Stefan responds: “You have me.” And he just holds her, embraces her, while she’s cries on his shoulder.
Most Touching Moment: Alaric tells Elena: Taking care of you and Jeremy has been the closest I’ve ever come to the life I’ve always wanted.”

Best Quote to Summarize the Series: Nothing great tonight, so I am going to steal the quote from the ‘Best Romantic Moment’ in which Stefan tells Elena: “You have me.”
