'The Vampire Diaries' recap: Episode 6, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'

Tyler and Caroline give each other 'the eyes.'
(The CW)

Most girls who wake up and look in the mirror and see a strange red mark on their neck, think something along the lines of: "Crap, my boyfriend (lover/random hookup/whatever) got too aggressive last night and now I have a stupid hickey."

The latest episode starts with Elena waking up looking in the mirror seeing two red dots on her neck, about an inch apart. Though she didn't say anything, I can only guess she was thinking: "Crap, my vampire ex-boyfriend tried to suck the blood out of me and now I have this mark to remind me of what a monster he is."

In both cases, the solution is to try to cover it up with make up, which we all know doesn't really work and certainly doesn't make you forget how the mark got there.

Anyways, in this episode, Elena, Bonnie, Caroline, Matt and Tyler start senior year of high school, which marks a year from when Elena and Stefan first met. Stefan shows up to keep an eye on Elena, like Klaus compelled him to do. Rebecca also shows up as a new student.

With his humanity turned off (yes, vampires can turn humanity off and on, like a light switch), Stefan acts like a dick to Elena and everyone else most of the episode.

Meanwhile, newly formed hybrid Tyler is excited about his new "gift" and thankful of Klaus for giving it to him.

"Why are you acting like some freaky hybrid slave minion?" Caroline asks him.

Apparently, he has been "sired," which means Tyler feels loyal to Klaus because his blood was used to create him.

In other news, Matt was still seeing Vicki, who tells him he can help her come back, so he does. Turns out she made a deal with a witch, who wants Elena dead so Klaus can't create hybrids. (Note: Vicki didn't tell Matt this until after he brought her back.) Bonnie helps Matt fix his mistake, which they do just in time because Vicki tried to lock Elena in a car and burn it.

Somewhere else, Katherine awakens Michael, the vampire vampire hunter, and then he feeds on her. Why? "I don't feed on living things," he tells her.

Other highlights:

Best Way to Use Your New Power of Compulsion: "Shut the hell up so we can go get drunk at the bonfire," Tyler says to his football coach.

Best Words Used to Stick it to Someone: Elena chugs a beer and Stefan tells her to be careful because she's a lightweight. She responds: "You think I'm going to let a blood addict tell me how to drink."

Best Quote to Summarize the Series: "In a town full of vampires, werewolves and witches, I'll fit right in," Vicki responds to Matt saying she'll still ghost even if she can come back when she wants.

Most Overused Line in TV: "I'm not going to let anybody hurt you," Damon tells Elena.

Most Unexpected Moment: In the cliffhanger, Mason Lockwood, Tyler's uncle and the show's introductory werewolf, returns.
