Despite hitting some rough patches and managing some major growing pains, Ginny and the rest of her San Diego Padres teammates on "Pitch" have made it to the midway point of the season, the All-Star Break. For those "lucky" enough to be invited to the game, it's an opportunity to connect with fans and compete against the very best. For those not invited, the All-Star break is a time to recharge mentally and physically for the long haul that is the second half of the season. This week's episode, titled "The Break," opens in the offices of Major League Baseball with a room of decision makers sitting around a table looking at a highlight reel of Ginny's impact on and more importantly off the field. At the end of the video, one executive tells the room that more that 36 million people have signed the Ginny Baker #PutHerintheGame petition. The meeting ends with the decision to kick this information up the commissioner for the final call.Meanwhile, Mike and Amelia's chance encounter seems to be developing into a regular arrangement. Mike, who wants to participate in the All-Star game, which the Padres are hosting, is struggling with a back ailment. After some light convincing, Amelia gets Mike to try a studio job over lacing them up for the game. This leaves a spot open on the All-Star team for one of the Padres. With his surging play, Blip is the logical choice, but it is hard to ignore the astronomical impact that Ginny has made not only on her team but the entire league. Over the first four episodes, "Pitch" has done an outstanding job of fleshing out the long-standing relationship among Ginny, Blip and his wife, Evelyn. The three of them have been on the road to the majors together from the very beginning. However, in tonight's episode in two pivotal scenes, we see even this shared dream can sometimes put them at odds with each other.First, as Ginny prepares for an impending visit from her mother, she laments to Evelyn that Blip will not be there to run interference.Within moments, the business of filling Mike's now-vacant All-Star roster spot comes into focus. Blip, who has been laser-focused on reaching this career milestone, logically believes the spot should be his. Evelyn wants this achievement for her husband even if it calls for her to sacrifice another family outing. Ginny is actually happy to be out of the spotlight for a change. Then just like that, the decision comes down: Ginny is in the game, Blip is out, and Evelyn, who is happy for Ginny, is also happy that she has an opening to be with her family for a long-awaited trip. Being the good friend that he is, Blip is happy for Ginny making the All-Star team even at his expense. With the All-Star game added to her plate, Ginny has to juggle that schedule along with hosting her mom. Naturally, this week's flashback scenes are focused on their relationship, which like most bonds has had its shares of ups and downs.Free to go on their trip to Disneyland, Blip and his family are having a great time when he gets a phone call out of the blue. Another All-Star spot has opened and Blip has been named to the team. He is over the moon, but notices that Evelyn is not mirroring his enthusiasm.Shocked, Blip suggests that his rock of a wife is not supportive. And we get the second pivotal moment as Evelyn (played by Meagan Holder) in painstaking detail reminds Blip of her many personal sacrifices that ensure his professional success. As jarring as this moment is given how rock-solid Blip and Evelyn have been thus far, it is in line with the overarching theme of this episode. And that is the personal and the professional cannot be easily separated. As all of these events are happening stateside, Oscar has taken a trip overseas to recruit Livan Duarte, a major Cuban prospect who happens to be a catcher. Though Oscar does not have the deepest pockets in the race, he appeals to his and Livan's shared backstory and lands him. This move has an immediate impact on the team, particularly current face of the franchise Mike Lawson, who is unsure about his future and unfortunately now his present-day situation. As Ginny is struggling with the pressure to perform well at the All-Star game, she is sideswiped by the news that her mother, Janet Baker (played by Chastity Dotson), has moved into a new relationship with old hometown friend Kevin (played by Darius McCrary). A dinner with the three of them plus Mike and Amelia, who are doing a bad job of staying away from each other, turns sour pretty quickly as the memory of Bill Baker comes up.Rattled or simply unlucky, Ginny gives up a monster home run in the All-Star game, which her mother did not attend. Coming to terms with how the personal was affecting the professional, Ginny goes to her mom's room and they move toward reconciliation. Blip also bought a ticket on the resolution express as he rushes back to Evelyn and the family to affirm that they are the highlight of his life."The Break" ends with Ginny and Mike talking on the phone licking their proverbial wounds, both personal and professional; knowing that there will be another game, another tomorrow, another time to be better. Next week, "Pitch" is bumped by "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," so we will have to wait two weeks to see what happens next.
