'How to Get Away With Murder' recap: Murder, cover up, repeat

Annalise Keating has officially lost her mind. She is absolutely crazy. Like insane. It's not as if we didn't already know this, but tonight's winter finale of "How to Get Away with Murder" confirmed it. Without further ado, let's find out who shot Annalise.

We've made it to the day of the shooting: the morning after Michaela and Caleb did the dirty but also found the gun. She calls Connor right away to cover up the gun. Uh oh, Michaela is in deep with Caleb. She's willing to tamper with evidence in order to protect him. Connor, the only one thinking logically, wants to call Annalise. Catherine disappeared in the morning, so Annalise shows up at the Hapstall mansion with the picture connecting Catherine to Philip. Annalise decides this is enough to make Catherine guilty. There's a catch: Annalise cannot represent both siblings now because it is a conflict of interest. Caleb is now the sole Hapstall client of Annalise.

At the police station, Philip has been called in for questioning. Sinclair also noticed the change in his record, prompting a meeting with Nate. She accuses Nate of tampering with the file. My, my, there is a lot of evidence tampering in this episode. But, hey, illegal activities are kind of this show's thing.

Sinclair vows to prove Nate messed with the file just as he messed with his wife's medication. With that, angry Nate comes out and threatens Sinclair. Bad move, bud. Sinclair accuses Nate of harassment while Nate comes right back at her with a racial discrimination claim—we've got a he-said-she-said scenario here. They sketchily meet up in the parking garage later because why would they go anywhere else? If the police were smart, they would just set up security in that parking garage since all the crime happens there. Anyways, Sinclair proposes a truce, but Nate isn't having any of it.

We have our first fatality of the evening: Judge Millstone, a.k.a. Asher's father. Let's rewind. Earlier in the morning, the cover of the paper was a story about the judge's cover-up of the gang rape Asher was involved in. The judge hung himself in his office. This event brings Bonnie and Asher back together.

Asher meets up with his mom to work on funeral arrangements, only to get disowned by her. "He sacrificed his whole career to hide your disgusting secret," she tells him. Before adding, "I don't want anything with you!" This sends Asher to his car where he proceeds to have the ultra cliché car meltdown, slamming into the steering wheel and all.

Bonnie is livid with Frank and Annalise because they were the ones who gave the information to the prosecutor's office. She comes to the realization that they are now just like Annalise. "People need to be protected from us," she says.

Annalise announces that Sinclair is on her way to the mansion to take statements about Catherine's involvement. She orders Michaela to bring Caleb to her apartment because it's obvious these two hit the sheets. Caleb panics but Michaela promises to keep him updated. Wes, Connor, Laurel and Michaela then reveal they suck as human beings because none of them has offered condolences to Asher. Hell, none of them even has his number. How could these five be together all the time working on cases and not have everyone's number?

What Annalise meant is that Sinclair is showing up in the back of a trunk, dead. Bonnie is the deliverywoman. Oops, Bonnie did it again. Well, not so fast. We rewind to the parking garage to see Sinclair walking to her car. A car pulls up beside her, and it's Asher behind the wheel! He demands answers for his father's death. Sinclair, ever empathetic, yells, "He deserved to die!" Asher's had enough, so he slams on gas and runs over Sinclair. Damn, Millstone! Didn't think you had killer in you!

It's Bonnie to the rescue! Asher is too in shock to check if Sinclair is dead. He is just sitting in his car…with a body under it. Totally casual. Bonnie just pops her head under to confirm it. Once again, totally casual. Death is way too much of a frequent occurrence for these people; they've become accustomed to it.

Frank has located Catherine over in Camden, N.J. Anyone knows Camden is aware it's not exactly the place you want to hide out alone. Annalise orders Frank to follow her just as Bonnie pulls up with Sinclair's body. Let the master manipulation of Annalise begin. Buckle up.

They drag the body into the foyer to the shock of Wes, Connor, Michaela and Laurel. Annalise reveals that it is Sinclair and informs the group they will stage a murder scene to pin the killing on none other than Catherine Hapstall. Connor sees the craziness and heads for the door. Annalise decides this is the prime opportunity to inform Asher that the group killed Sam. Whoop, there it is. Connor cowards back, tail between his legs. Annalise says, in the scariest we've seen her, they WILL help cover this up. The only reason they are in this whole mess is because they killed Sam. Annalise is playing dirty. What other secrets will she reveal?

The group separates between wiping the car clean of prints and carrying Sinclair's body up to the roof. Annalise plants little tracks through voicemails. First, calling Sinclair to summon her to the mansion to show new evidence. Then, calling Catherine begging her to come clean about the murders. Wes discovers Annalise is doing all of this to protect Nate because he was the last one in the car with Sinclair. Wes calls Nate to try to get him to talk some sense into Annalise.

On the roof of the mansion, Bonnie wants to toss Sinclair off. That's enough for Michaela and Connor and they storm out. They are not about to get stuck in this trap again. Laurel wants to dump the gun in the pool so the chlorine will destroy any DNA on it. Wes takes control of it, and they follow Michaela and Connor outside just as Sinclair smacks right onto the pavement, shattering the rest of her bones. Remember, we have seen all of this before. It's only being put together in order now.

Bonnie now has the gun and heads up to Annalise. She delivers the gun and goes to take care of panicked Asher. At the gas station, she washes herself of Sinclair's blood only to find Asher missing. He comes strolling up with a flyer for a car wash. Asher is now thinking like an official murder cover-upper! That's probably not a thing, but I just made it one. They wash the car of Sinclair's blood, covering up any connection to her murder.

Frank goes to Catherine's motel and drugs her with the secobarbital. Remember, she turns up in the woods sometime the next morning.

Annalise announces they need to make the murder seem more "legit." She calls the police, gasping for air and says Catherine Hapstall has shot her. She tosses the gun to Connor to shoot her and threatens to ruin his life with Oliver if he refuses. She is out of her mind! Everyone is freaking the hell out. Connor raises the gun, shaking, hand on the trigger, and Michaela jumps in front of it! She has lost her mind, too! Connor tosses the gun to Michaela and runs out the door. He screams, "I hate you so much," as he runs out the door. Annalise tries Michaela and she quickly joins Asher outside. Attention shifts to Wes. Annalise suggests shooting her in the leg so she'll survive. Wes refuses, saying Nate is on the way. Laurel is her last resort but she, too, refuses, accepting the fact that maybe they do deserve to go to jail.

But Annalise does not throw up the white flag; instead, she utters the words Wes has been longing to hear all season. "Rebecca is dead," she says. He grabs the gun and aims it at her. She is basically asking for it, telling him that all the times he cried to her she was lying. Wes has heard enough and pulls the trigger. He shoots Annalise in the abdomen rather than the leg. He's furious and towers over her, ready to end Annalise's life. She realizes this and calls out, "Christoph! Christoph!"

We flashback to a young Wes, or "Christoph," being in an interrogated by police about his mother's death. Looking through the glass are Annalise and Eve. Eve whispers, "Good God, Annalise. What did we do?" End Scene.

Holy moly, that was intense! Eve and Annalise clearly know what happened in Wes's mom's death. Maybe it wasn't a suicide after all? As always, we are left with more questions and very few answers. I have to think Annalise will survive, but the fallout from all of this madness puzzles me.

"How to Get Away with Murder" returns on Feb. 11, 2016.
