LOS ANGELES _ IFC adds two very different comedies to its lineup Thursday, Oct. 1, with the launch of the sports comedy "Benders" and the gender-bender "Gigi Does It."tmpplchld 'BENDERS'tmpplchld A group of friends has an irrational obsession with their adult hockey league. That would make sense if they had any real talent. The lack of skills doesn't matter because they have each other.tmpplchld Lindsey Broad, Chris Distefano, Mark Gessner, Ruy Iskandar and Andrew Schulz star. Executive producer, Jim Serpico, needed actors who looked like they were longtime friends because 90-95 percent of the series will take place off the ice.tmpplchld "The show is about a bunch of young guys post-college who were trying to become adults, and they're not really quick to do so. That's these guys in real life," Serpico says. "Then they look at us right in the eye and say, 'Yeah, we play hockey. We skate all the time.' So we had to hire consultants to teach them how to skate badly.tmpplchld "It turns out they get on the ice, they fall down, they don't know what to do and we waste all this money on consultants."tmpplchld Distefano admits he had not ice skated in 20 years, but he told the producers he was an Olympic ice skater.tmpplchld 'GIGI DOES IT'tmpplchld David Krumholtz, best known for his work as a math genius on "Numb3rs," slips into a dress to play 76-year-old Boca Raton resident Gertrude Rotblum, aka "Gigi. " The death of her husband comes with a new freedom, as Gigi ends up with an unexpected inheritance.tmpplchld Krumholtz goes through 4 1/2 hours of hair, makeup and wardrobe to transform himself into the spunky senior citizen. The team that helps him make the transformation also created Johnny Knoxville's look in "Bad Grandpa" and designed the Chucky doll from "Child's Play."tmpplchld The long hours are needed because in the show, Gigi interacts with the public. If the makeup isn't convincing, then the jokes don't work.tmpplchld "I asked for a couple of prosthetic pieces, maybe a chin and a nose, and before you know it, my whole face, every centimeter of my face, my eyelids, everything, is covered in prosthetic makeup," Krumholtz says.tmpplchld The first time Krumholtz saw himself as Gigi, it brought a tear to his eye because he looked so much like his deceased grandmother. The actor has made the character a tribute to his grandmother, who he says lived a very spirited life.tmpplchld ___tmpplchld (c)2015 The Fresno Bee (Fresno, Calif.)tmpplchld Visit The Fresno Bee (Fresno, Calif.) at www.fresnobee.comtmpplchld Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.tmpplchld
