Howard County police are investigating a head-on collision that put four people in the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m., a 2004 Cadillac traveling north on Homewood Road crossed the double yellow center line and collided with a 2015 Mercedes traveling south.

The crash shut down Homewood Road between Ashby Court and Castlebridge Road for about two and a half hours.

Police identified the driver of the Cadillac as Fernando Rodrigo Ballesteros, 57, of Ellicott City. He was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and is currently listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Mercedes, 35-year-old Melissa Marie Hutchison of Elkridge, was also transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and is in stable condition, police said.

Two 9-year-old children, who were riding in the back seat of the Mercedes at the time of the accident, were taken to Howard County General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
