Monday meatball roundup: Sophia Meatball Hut

The Baltimore Sun

Pop Goes the Meatball, Baltimore Diner's continuing coverage of the Year of the Meatball, continues.

But first enjoy "Sophia Meatball Hut," a prescient 1984 SCTV video short with Andrea Martin as Sophia Loren.

In Baltimore meatball news, Aldo's in Little Italy has a new Kobe meatball on the menu. Sergio Vitale of Aldo's says it's made  with 100% A5-grade Kobe beef. The new Aldo's meatball, says Vitale, is a decadent version of the signature veal meatball at Chazz: A Bronx Original, his nearby Inner Harbor restaurant.

Aldo's $14 Kobe meatball is a little larger than six ounces, Vitale says and easily feeds two people.

Regi's in Federal Hill was an early rider on the meatball express, owner Alan Morstein writes us. On the menu now are the Veal Cordon Bleu Smashed Balls Skillet Style, which consists of two smashed veal meatballs, melted Gruyere cheese and Black Forest ham, and the Veal Parmesan Smashed Ball Ciabatta, which smushes two smashed veal meatballs on a ciabbata roll with melted provolone cheese and marinara. Get them while they're hat.

The new meatballs at Aldo's and Regi's have been added to the meatball photo gallery.
