Nando's Peri-Peri raises close to $30,000 for University of Maryland College Park program

Nando's Peri-Peri raised $29,700 for University of Maryland College Park's Campus Pantry.

Nando’s Peri-Peri has raised $29,700 for University of Maryland College Park’s Campus Pantry through proceeds donated from initial business at its new location near the university.

The amount represents the most successful fundraiser the company has ever had for a single restaurant opening, according to spokesman Jim Popkin.

The restaurant pledged to donate 100 percent of its proceeds from its first three days in business to the university’s program that gives emergency food to students and faculty in need.

The South African-Portuguese restaurant chain known for its spicy flame-grilled chicken opened Oct. 25 in a space on Route 1 formerly occupied by Ratsie’s pizza shop.
