Did Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s Super Bowl halftime show make a subtle political statement?

All indications are that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira killed it during the Super Bowl LIV halftime show on Sunday night. But the two Latin pop stars may have been making a political statement as well, directed towards President Donald Trump.

During the opening of “Let’s Get Loud,” Jennifer Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter Emme Maribel Muniz began singing from behind what many referred to as a glowing cage. It was then revealed that several other children were sitting and singing inside similar cages. After the performance, viewers took to social media to speculate on whether or not Lopez was referencing the controversial border situation that has immigrant children separated from their detained parents.

What may (or may not) have confirmed the protest was the children leaving the cages to sing a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.”

Meanwhile, Lopez was wearing a cape that had the American flag on one side and the flag of Puerto Rico on the other. Perhaps another political statement about Puerto Rico being a true part of the United States. J. Lo and Shakira have yet to comment on any possible political statement made during the show.
