The catwalk at Baltimore Fashion Week is about to come to life with a ferocious roar -- with the help of designer Tenisha Campbell's wildlife-themed collection.
The 32-year-old from Upper Marlboro will be introducing her line titled "Welcome to the Jungle," featuring jungle and tribal inspired prints with the use of orange iridescent fabrics.
Campbell started creating clothes in late 2006, but she has been drawing since she was 4. As a designer, she said, she finds it important to offer her clients a variety of styles and sizes. "My favorite aspect about Baltimore Fashion Week is that I have the platform to showcase designs that represent the variety of women I design for," she said.
Baltimore Fashion Week (baltimore-fashionweek.com/) will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Lord Baltimore Hotel. Before it begins, Campbell took time out of her schedule to talk with us about her favorite and least favorite fashion trends, her worst pet peeve and more.
Worst pet peeve? Bullies/people who put others down or make them feel bad.
What songs are you loving/hating right now? I am loving Pharrell's latest album and all jazzy tracks from Robert Glasper. I actually haven't been a fan of some of the new rappers.
Last concert/gig you went to? It has been a really long time. I think it was Black Alley.
Your worst habit? Coming up with elaborate ideas at the last minute because it will be at a time it is untimely to complete. I suffer from too much motivation.
Last movie you liked? I loved the latest "Transformers" movie.
TV shows you can't get enough of? "How I Met Your Mother," "Law & Order" and, of course, "Project Runway."
Favorite and least favorite fashion statement? My favorite is mixing prints and/or color block designs. My least favorite is the super-long tees on guys that look like night gowns.
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? Any restaurant that gives an awesome view of the harbor.
Best advice you ever got? "Self- confidence is the best outfit; rock it, own it and create garments that exude on the same level."
Upcoming fall trend you're excited about? Bold hues of earth tones and patterns.
Who are your fashion inspirations? Tracy Reese, Coco Chanel, Bet-sey Johnson, Zac Posen, Jean Paul Gaultier.
Your favorite thing about Baltimore? The seafood and art!
