While I love almost everything about my job on wedding days — the vows and the toasts, the beautiful details that couples and their coordinators work so hard on and the opportunity to create beautiful portraits of my clients on one of the happiest days of their lives — it's the raw emotion and unscripted moments that I most enjoy capturing.
Katie and Sean had those in spades. I shot this image as we were just finishing up portraits of them in Mount Vernon Place and they were getting ready to join their guests for their reception in the Peabody Library. Katie was vibrating with joy all day and Sean kept sneaking these wonderful little glances at her.
I sometimes spend a minute or longer with my camera raised, my focus locked and my exposure set, just waiting for a moment like this. To me, that's the difference between making a photo of something that my clients will want to remember and treasure as opposed to just documenting a scene.
This image sums up exactly how Katie and Sean felt about marrying each other. There is nothing but joy. And the gorgeous late-afternoon light streaming behind them doesn't hurt, either.
