NBC News praises Ayman Mohyeldin as it sends him back to Gaza

NBC News is sending correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin back to Gaza this weekend, it said in a statement Friday night.

"Ayman Mohyeldin has done extraordinary reporting throughout the escalation of the conflict in Gaza, filing 25+ reports over the past 17 days, including his invaluable and well-documented contribution to the story on the deaths of the four Palestinian children on Wednesday," an NBC spokesperson wrote in an email response to The Sun about Mohyeldin's status.

"As with any news team in conflict zones, deployments are constantly reassessed. We've carefully considered our deployment decisions and we will be sending Ayman back to Gaza over the weekend. We look forward to his contributions in the coming days," the statement concluded.

The statement doesn't start to explain the decicision to pull Mohyeldin, whose work in Gaza has been praised at this blog and elsewhere, following the Wednesday report cited in the statement. (Read my reviews of his work in Gaza that here and here.)

But, at least, one of the best reporters on the ground in Gaza is going back to try and help viewers understand what is going on as the Israeli invasion continues -- and facts are needed more than ever.

Mohyeldin tweeted the good news:

Thanks for all the support. Im returning to #Gaza to report. Proud of NBC's continued commitment to cover the #Palestinian side of the story
