Great Baltimore cocktails, The Whiskey Ginger at Beatnik Bar

Ah, the Mule. The Buck. A magical combination of liquor and ginger — be it in ale or beer form — and a dose of citrus, creating one of Earth's finest and simplest delights.

Every bar has it on their cocktail menu (and if they don't they certainly should) and most of them are pretty good, but we're always on the lookout for those common cocktails that are elevated above the rest. That cocktail is the Whiskey Ginger at Beatnik Bar.

What elevates this particular common cocktail above the others? The devil is in the details, and in this case every component going into the cocktail is made in house (except the ginger beer). Co-owner Grant Shprintz explains: "Everything is seasonally dependent and made as fresh as possible in house. We're looking to change our menus according to what's available." The ginger-infused whiskey going into the cocktail is steeped for weeks in fresh ginger, giving it a full bodied, ginger-blasted flavor. Crabbie's Ginger Beer fills the glass the rest of the way and freshly squeezed lime juice rounding off the affair with a magically special garnish: a candied whiskey ginger chip.

The paper-thin chip is easily one of the best garnishes I've had in a long time. They're to die for. I'd eat a whole bowl of them. Perfect sweetness and ginger heat with a melt in your mouth. I almost wanted to pull it out of the drink and set it aside so the sugar wouldn't melt into the drink. Yes, it really is the small touches that matter when elevating a whiskey ginger drink above the others.

So other area bars, take note. Invest in candied ginger chips immediately, shut up and take my money. Until then, I'll be at Beatnik gently setting them aside while people look at me like I'm crazy.
