Baltimore nonprofits to be featured on season premiere of ABC's 'Secret Millionaire'

It pays to give back.

Four Baltimore charities will be highlighted when the series "Secret Millionaire" returns at 8 p.m. Aug. 4 on ABC, according to a press release.

Casey Cares Foundation, Duncan Street Garden Project, Moveable Feast and Rose Street Community will be the Baltimore foundations getting surprise funds in the season premiere. "Secret Millionaire," based on a U.K. show, follows self-made millionaires as they "spend a week in the country's poorest areas and ultimately reward some unsung community heroes with hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money," according to ABC's website.

What to expect? Here's what went down at Moveable Feast, according to the release:

"The original camera crew arrived at Moveable Feast in July 2011 and began conducting interviews with staff, volunteers and board members.  They also brought with them, a volunteer whom they claimed would be their “official” spokesperson to shadow throughout the taping.  The “volunteer” worked in the kitchen preparing food, helped with packaging of the meals and assisted with the home deliveries.  On the last day of the filming, the Moveable Feast staff was surprised to discover that the volunteer was actually Anne Beiler of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and she presented them with a sizable check."

“We were completely shocked and very moved by this experience .... in fact, it literally brought me to tears.  We were chosen from amongst many other charities in the area and that is a true compliment to our staff and volunteers who work so hard each and every day,” Tom Bonderenko, Executive Director for Moveable Feast said in the press release. He added, “this was so unexpected yet wonderful and it means so much to us and to the people we serve in the community.”

Downtown Baltimore-based Moveable Feast was founded in 1989 to provide meals to people with HIV/AIDS. They have since branched out to help women with serious illnesses.
