Kids' camps available from Center Stage, Everyman, Lyric, Single Carrot

A sampling of performing arts summer camps in Baltimore.

Camp Center Stage

Now in its fourth year, this program has two components — a session July 8 to July 19 for students entering grades one through six; and a session July 22 to Aug. 2 for students entering grades seven through 12. There are about 40 to 50 participants per camp. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The camp is "interdisciplinary," said Rosiland Cauthen, director of community programs and education at Center Stage. "The students not only learn acting, but singing, dancing, musical theater, improvisation, clowning and miming."

Each camp is capped by a collaborative performance. "They're not doing 'Annie Jr.' or 'The Wiz.' They're performing their own original creation from scratch," Cauthen said.

Camp is held at Center Stage, 700 N. Calvert St. Tuition is $500 ($25 registration fee). Scholarships are offered. Call 410-332-0033 or go to

Everyman Theatre High School Summer Acting Intensive

This four-week program is designed for students entering ninth through 12th grade. Up to 14 participants are admitted. A performance, typically of an abridged classic play, wraps things up on the Everyman stage.

"The camp is for anyone interested in strengthening their skills in the theater," said Marcus Kyd, Everyman's education director. "We make it clear it is going to be very hard work. There are pretty intensive acting exercises with monologues and scenes, vocal exercises, and physical exercises to expand movement vocabulary."

Camp runs July 8 to Aug. 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday at Everyman Theatre, 315 W. Fayette St. Tuition is $750. Scholarships, including work-study, are offered. There is a waiting list for the 2013 camp. Call 443-615-7055, ext. 7142, or email

Opera Camp at the Modell Lyric

Thanks to underwriting by the Rotary Club of Baltimore and Kenneth S. Battye Foundation, the fourth annual camp presented by the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric offers free tuition to 25 students, ages 13 to 18. Admission is by audition; prospective campers must be prepared to sing an aria at the audition.

"There are classes in vocal technique, acting, improv, yoga and Alexander technique [a tension-reducing regimen]," said James Harp, director of opera and education at the Lyric. "We also offer master classes with singers and sessions on makeup, wigs and stage combat. And the students create their own opera that they perform on the last day."

The 2014 Opera Camp, July 8 to Aug. 2, meets 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Modell Lyric, 140 W. Mount Royal Ave. Call 410-900-1150 or go to

Single Carrot Theatre Summer High School Conservatory

The conservatory, now in its fifth year, is "the cornerstone of our educational program," said Single Carrot ensemble member and director of public relations Jessica Garrett.

Members of the company and guest artists provide training in acting, stage combat, set design and more to students entering ninth through 12th grades. Participants give a performance at the end of the camp.

The conservatory runs July 29 to Aug. 9 at Single Carrot Theatre, 1727 North Charles St. Sessions run 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tuition is $525. Scholarships are offered. Call 443-844- 9253 or email
