A shuttering in Fells Point: Sam's Kid closes

Sam's Kid has closed in Fells Point. Monday was the last day for the chic pan-Asian restaurant, according to owner Andrea Rani.

"I have met the most amazing people here, Rani said. "Every one of the customers treated me like family."

Sam's Kid opened in November 2009 with a menu of small plates, stir-fried entrees and noodle soups. The dan dan with spicy Szechwan pork, spinach, Napa cabbage, and the Korean chili beef in chicken broth were standouts.

In her December 2009 review of Sam's Kid, Baltimore Sun restaurant critic Elizabeth Large praised the cool, serene atmosphere and the elegantly presented complex cuisine.

A restaurant a bear to get up and running by nature but particularly so in an old neighborhood like Fells Point, where an aging infrastructure provides myriad challenges. The strain of getting Sam's Kid open and keeping it running was visible from the beginning.

Rani was more sanguine. " I enjoyed being here, she said. "It just didn't work out."
