Baltimore's
is looking for a few good doodlers. And Googlers.
As part of a nationwide competition called "Doodle for Google 2012," the museum is encouraging Maryland students in kindergarten through 12th grade to redesign Googles's homepage banner around the theme "If I could travel in time, I'd visit…" The 10 best state submissions will be exhibited at the Walters from May 23 to June 24.
Walters director Gary Vikan said the museum's participation in the nationwide contest dovetails with its mission "to inspire students' imagination and creativity through art." The museum also lends itself well to the contest's time-travel theme, he noted.
"Our diverse collections, including mummies, armor, paintings and sculptures, allow children to transport themselves to other places from ancient civilizations to modern times," Vikan said.
For the national contest, finalists will be chosen by a celebrity panel, including Katy Perry, Jordin Sparks and others. On May 2, finalists representing each grade group will be posted online, and the general public will vote to select the overall winner. The champion Google doodler will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and have his or her doodle featured on the Google homepage May 18.
