There aren't many sports bars in Charles Village. But CVP, short for Charles Village Pub, more than makes up for them.
The spacious pub is, by now, an institution among Johns Hopkins students and neighbors, often called the city's quintessential college bar. It's so established in the neighborhood — it turned 30 this year — it hasn't found it urgent to update its creaky website. But no matter — every week, loads of people pack the St. Paul Street bar to watch sports and take advantage of dirt-cheap specials.
On Sundays, the crowds are just as big, which makes the bar a destination for those looking to cheer on the Ravens among other young fans.
Drinks: CVP has a nice selection of beer, and not just for a college bar. It has 12 beers on draft, including Dogfish Head and Baltimore's own Oliver's Ironman Pale Ale by Pratt Street Ale House. Of course, there are the usual imports (priced between $4-$5.50) and domestics ($3.50). Though the bar has several specials during the week, it offers none on weekends. Ravens fans will have to do with Natty Boh, sold at $2.75 by the can.
Food: The bar serves a variety of items that range from small (cheese poppers) to proper meals (rack of ribs and steamed shrimp). And the sizes are big — the Charles Village Club sandwich is a monster with several layers of bread, turkey and ham. Again, CVP has no dining specials on weekends. Prices range from $2.95 for the chili to $14.25 for the ribs & shrimp platters. There are also three desserts under $3.25.
Decor: From outside, CVP is recognizable by its green awning. Inside, fans have grown accustomed to its green booths and the long row of stools opposite by the bar. Though some call it a dive, it's fairly organized, especially for a college bar. Still, it definitely looks its 30 years, as worn-down as some of its green booths. On Sundays, several TVs broadcast the Ravens.
Distance from stadium: St. Paul Street can take you straight from the bar to the stadium in 15 minutes.
Parking: Street, metered-parking is widely available.
