Baltimore hip hop duo AK Slaughter share their likes and dislikes

AK Slaughter, the dual voices of Emily Slaughter and Aran Keating, have been making music in Baltimore since their college days at Goucher, mixing fast with slow and musical simplicity with quirky complexity. Their answers for this week’s Like/Dislike are almost as entertaining as their sharp lyrics and funky beats. Don’t miss them at the Fifth Annual All Rap Round Robin at 9 p.m. Friday at Floristree, featuring 12 different talents. They’ll be releasing their new split EP with RapDragons there.

Favorite quote/saying?
“You know, I cried when I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed ... really hard.” —Jerri Blank

Favorite and most loathed fashion statements?
I’m really into high waisted skirts and snappy collegiate blouses with cardigans. Very Sylvia Plath, that’s kind of the look I generally go for. That or dust bowl era orphan chic. I absolutely hate clogs with all of my being, so much so that sometimes I can’t even speak.

What’s on your iPod?
Just got Fever Ray’s self-titled record. It’s really good.

Last play you attended?
The Stillpointe Theatre Initiative’s production of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. It was performed on the bed of a truck on a farm in the middle of nowhere Maryland. It ruled. Murder! Rape! Racism! Blood! Mulattoes! (

What song are you hating right now?
I hate goddamn Mumford & Sons — the dumbest most meaningless crap fraud wannabe music.

Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore?
The Sidebar or The Rendezvous ... long live the great dives.

Favorite fashion statement?
Shorts so long they are almost pants.

What’s on your iPod?
Lakeside, Public Enemy, Mickey Free’s latest — Last of the Tight W-----s.

Last concert you attended?
Sade at the 1st Mariner. Holy god I love that woman.

If you go
Fifth Annual All Rap Round Robin at Floristree, 405 W. Franklin St., Downtown. 9 p.m. Friday. $7.
