American Craft Council takes the cake

To celebrate its 70th birthday, the American Craft Council will be throwing itself a little party this weekend.

And area bakers are bringing the cake.

The council invited local bakeries and cake designers to submit their ideas for cakes inspired by artists that will be at the show.

Participating bakeries are:

•SugarBakers Cakes of Catonsville

•Sweet Bakery, opening soon in Mount Vernon

•Bakers Park of Catonsville

•Herman's Bakery of Baltimore

•Cakes by Cynthia of Baltimore

•Cakes by Sue of Elkridge

•Flavor Cupcakery of Bel Air

•Bramble Hollow Baked Goods of West Friendship

Inspired by the colorful glasswork of Mary Johannessen, Sue Sontag of Cakes by Sue created a four-tiered cake that mirrors not only the color of the glass, but Johannessen's geometric design. Mimicking a cuff bracelet by So-Young Park, SugarBakers designed an asymmetrical cake with silver baubles and colored "beads."

The cakes will be on display during the show. For looking but not tasting, unfortunately.
