If you saved the cash you received as Christmas or holiday gifts, then you're flush and ready for the Washington Winter Show of Antiques and Fine Arts this weekend at American University. If you didn't save your money, it's OK, honey, because the recent recession has led to a bargain market for many kinds of antiques. According to expert collectors, it's never been a better time to purchase heirloom furniture, ceramics, glassware and more.
The show features wares from 45 dealers from the U.S. and Europe, including experts in formal antiques, country furniture and Oriental rugs, offering a range of furnishings and decorative arts,.
The plan: The show opens with a private viewing and reception on Thursday. We'll skip that. Arrive, instead, on Friday or Saturday. (If you're looking to have something appraised a la "Antiques Roadshow," Sunday is the day. The fee is $10.) Both days offer dealer talks and a guided show tour.
New to the show this year is fine arts dealer Arthur Guy Kaplan from Baltimore, who specializes in Georgian and Victorian jewelry. Pieces include an English amethyst brooch set with pearls and diamonds in a black enamel mounting, circa 1860.
The details: The show is at the Katzen Arts Center at American University, 4400 Massachusetts Ave. N.W. in Washington. The closest Metro stations is Tenleytown-AU on the Red Line. Free on-site parking is available.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $15 for a one-day pass or $25 for a three-day pass.
