Ida Bernstein, 26, of Fells Point, sprinted 150 yards in high heels and out-raced a pack of similarly shoed women to win the second Regis & Kelly High Heel-a-thon Wednesday.
Her winning secret? "I think I was a little closer to Kelly Ripa in the line than I was the last time," said Bernstein, who finished second in the 2008 inaugural event. The race was inspired by Kelly Ripa's daily sprints, usually in heels, as she tries to keep up with the demands of her co-hosting duties on "Live With Regis & Kelly."
Bernstein is a member of the U.S. women's rugby team. As the winner of the race, held Wednesday afternoon in New York's Central Park, the Dulaney High graduate was awarded $10,000 and a new Volkswagen Jetta.
Bernstein dove across the finish line to win, suffering several cuts and bruises in the process. "I'm not sure if it was deliberate or not, I really don't remember," she said shortly after winning the race. "I'd like to think that I still would have won even if I didn't fall, but I'm not sure. Luckily, my wounds were all superficial."
Proceeds from the race benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health's The Heart Truth campaign.
