Youghiogheny River Festival
What: The Youghiogheny River Festival is an annual celebration of the river; proceeds go to local organizations that support the river and its watershed. Events include demonstrations on stream ecology, as well as a nature hike with a Garrett College professor and a dance for universal peace.

How much: Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6 to 12; children under age 6 are free.
What's nearby: Deep Creek Lake in Oakland, recently named one of the top summer towns by Budget Travel magazine, is right down the road from this river festival and has plenty of activities. Visitors can rent boats or canoes or go swimming along the shoreline. Also, the Adventure Sports Center International in McHenry offers a man-made river channel for whitewater and paddling enthusiasts.
