Budget Travel names Deep Creek Lake town one of the top summer destinations

The town of Oakland in Garrett County near Deep Creek Lake was recently named one of America's Top Summer Lake Towns of 2010 by Budget Travel magazine.

Oakland, the county seat, has a population of about 2,000 and sits just to the south of Deep Creek Lake.

"We are thrilled that Budget Travel has chosen Deep Creek Lake and Oakland for this honor," said Joyce Bishoff, interim president of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.

The town was noted for its old-fashioned ice cream parlor, Lakeside Creamery, and the popcorn specialties created by Copper Kettle Popcorn.

The magazine also cited Deep Creek Lake's versatility. Visitors can rent anything from water trampolines to powerboats at the marina, and swimmers can head out to the mile shoreline. Nature enthusiasts are treated to free nature hikes in the area, and the Lodges at Sunset Village were recommended for overnight stays.

Budget Travel's list also included Chelan, Wash.; Grand Marais, Minn.; Dillon, Colo.; Forest Grove, Ore.; Rangeley, Maine; Leland, Mich.; and Truckee, Calif.
