On March 26, two of Baltimore's most prominent bands are playing shows in Washington.
Indie rockers Wye Oak are performing at the Rock 'n' Roll Hotel and dream pop group Beach House will be at the Black Cat . Both bands are duos who developed a strong local following and signed to indie labels. Wye Oak has released two albums and an EP on Merge Records, and Beach House put out their third album on Sub Pop Records.
Wye Oak's new EP, "My Neighbor/My Creator," came out this month. The first single, "My Neighbor," is one of the group's hardest-hitting songs yet.
Singer-guitarist Jenn Wasner could just be Baltimore's best ax-woman. Together, Wasner and drummer-bassist Andy Stack conjure a broad, dynamic sound, far beyond what you'd think two musicians are capable of creating. They are also dating.
Tickets for Wye Oak's show at the Rock 'n' Roll Hotel are $12. Doors open at 8 p.m. Call 202-388-7625 or go to rockandrollhoteldc.com.
Beach House kicks off a relentless, four-month tour tonight, which takes them to Europe and back. Their new album "Teen Dream" is their most mature and cohesive effort yet, and audiences are paying attention. Club gigs such as the one at the Black Cat are beginning to sell out.
Oh, and for the record, keyboardist-singer Victoria Legrand and guitarist-singer Alex Scally are not a couple. They're just friends.
