March Madness has taken over Charm City. The Terps and Bears have their dancing shoes on, but will their dance marathon last through the weekend?
[1] College Park's favorite lightning rod, senior guard Greivis Vasquez, will get one last chance to make the Terps a winner again at the NCAA tournament. Fourth-seeded Maryland plays 13th-seeded Houston in the first round of the tournament Friday night. I pointed out in a column two weeks ago that Vasquez has failed to deliver a signature postseason run in his four years at Maryland. I liked the Terps' chances in the ACC tournament, but Greivis and crew crapped the bed against Georgia Tech. I'm optimistic the Terps will regroup and handle the Cougars on Friday, then give Michigan State (presumably) a good game Sunday. A spot in the Sweet 16 is extremely attainable. The opportunity is there for Vasquez. Will he seize it?
[2] I give Todd Bozeman a lot of credit for turning around the Morgan State basketball program. Led by local products Reggie Holmes and Kevin Thompson, the Bears are dancing for a second straight March. They will probably get smoked by WVU on Friday, but Bozeman's star is on the rise again. I hear he'll only leave Morgan for a job at a major program. That offer will come soon if the Bears keep winning.
[3] Ravens DE/OLB Paul Kruger, shown above being terrible at tennis, is bulking up this offseason -- perhaps for a switch to two-technique defensive end now that Dwan Edwards has signed with Buffalo. Kruger, who weighed 260 pounds last season, better spend a lot of time at the Golden Corral buffet if he's going to make that switch.
[4] Frank Walker is likely to be the next Ravens free agent to bolt Baltimore. See ya, Frank. Walker reportedly is close to signing with an NFC team, but he should be playing for a UFL team. Losing Walker will make the Ravens, one of the NFL's most penalized teams, more disciplined, but now we have to find a new punching bag and scapegoat. Bummer.
[5] The status of Brian Roberts' achy back is a mystery after B-Rob flew back to B-more for a Monday checkup. It's time to be concerned the O's leadoff man won't be ready for Opening Day.
[6] O's manager Dave Trembley and pitching coach Rick Kranitz said Wednesday there is no front-runner in the arms race for the fifth spot in the team's rotation. It was assumed at the start of spring training that Chris Tillman would lock down the spot, but Jason Berken and David Hernandez have pitched well enough to remain in the conversation. At least whoever wins the job this year won't be Adam Eaton or Rich Hill.
[7] Tiger Woods will make his comeback from his highly publicized, high-class hoodrat hiatus next month at the Masters -- and he'll win it, too.
