There aren't many local bands with a repertoire quite like the Egg Babies Orchestra.

Composed of a rotating cast of musicians from Baltimore's indie rock scene, the Egg Babies Orchestra plays only a handful of shows each year, and performs only covers of other people's music.

The past couple of concerts have been Movie Shows, where the band performs a tune from a movie soundtrack while a clip from the film plays on a screen behind them. The group never plays the same song twice, and most of the material comes from '80s flicks. During Saturday's show at The Ottobar, almost all the songs they'll play will be from that decade.

"Every movie from the '80s - every big movie - had a hit song with it," said Egg Babies keyboardist Mike Ward.

Plus, most of the Egg Babies' audience grew up watching '80s movies. So far, songs such as "Magic Dance" from "Labyrinth" and "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" from "The Goonies" have been crowd favorites, Ward said.

When putting together a set list, the folks in the Egg Babies research which soundtracks were hits, and review movies they loved as kids. Often, they stick to songs written specifically for certain movies or songs that wouldn't be known if it weren't for their silver screen counterparts - such as "You're the Best" from "Karate Kid."

"It's not a very good song, but when you place the music with the montage and people see it, it has a really cool effect," Ward said.

Saturday's concert will be the third Movie Show the Egg Babies have played.

"I was excited for the other two, but I feel like this one is going to be our best one," Ward said.
