Take Five with Emily Burke, MICA Art Market vendor

The Baltimore Sun

Looking for artistic gift ideas for the holiday season? Head to the Maryland Institute College of Art's Art Market, a community-oriented event featuring artwork on sale from over 275 MICA students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Emily Burke, 21, a senior ceramics student from Harford County, will be participating in the Art Market this year, which will be held Dec. 10-13 at the Brown Center, 1301 W. Mount Royal Ave. (more at mica.edu).

There is an Art Market Scholarship awarded to a few sellers each year, Burke said, and 15 percent of all of the money made at the market goes directly to scholarship funds. Before the selling begins, Burke talked to us about her artistic contributions this year, her inspirations and more.

What do you like about the MICA Art Market?

I personally enjoy the opportunities that it provides for professional development and community engagement. Each year I look forward to meeting new people and making connections with individuals that I might not have otherwise met. … I was a recipient of the Art Market Scholarship in my sophomore year. The scholarship helped me immensely and I was able to use the money to help fund artwork that I would have otherwise been unable to produce.

What kinds of artwork will you be contributing this year?

This year I am participating at two different tables, one in the ceramics department and the other in mixed media. At my ceramics table, I will be selling various paleontology-themed pieces, including dinosaur fossil ornaments, a saber-toothed tiger sculpture and mugs with carved fossils that I have collaborated with Sarah Barnes, the organizer of the Art Market, in making. At my mixed-media table, I will be selling various micro-terrariums, perfect for setting on your desk or windowsill.

Which is your favorite piece?

My favorite piece that I will be featuring would have to be my dinosaur fossil ornaments. I have had a love for paleontology and the natural world since I was a child, and this often comes through in my work.

As an artist, what inspires your work and what do you hope people get from it?

The natural world has been an unparalleled source of inspiration to me. It has become a driving force in my artwork and I find myself returning again and again to depicting natural subject matter. Growing up, my family encouraged and embraced my love for nature and I constantly endeavored to learn as much as I could about the animals I encountered.

Why would you recommend the art market for people doing some holiday shopping?

Art Market is an excellent way to support local artists, both through purchasing their work directly and providing funds for the need-based Art Market Scholarship. It is a great place to find some truly unique and unforgettable gifts for your loved ones.
