Bassnectar and Above & Beyond will headline this year's second Moonrise Festival, a celebration of electronic dance music slated for Aug. 8 and 9 at Pimlico Race Course.
Bassnectar, the stage name for DJ and performer Lorin Ashton, will perform Friday, Aug. 8. The London-based Above & Beyond will perform on Saturday, Aug. 9.
Some 40 other acts are scheduled to perform during the two-day festival. Tickets, priced at $149.50-$225, may be purchased through the festival's website, moonrisefestival.com.
Other acts scheduled for this year's Moonrise Festival include Big Gigantic, Datsik, Dillon Francis, Die Antwoord, The Glitch Mob, Porter Robinson and Zeds Dead.
The Moonrise concept was first publicly introduced in 2013. But organizers could not obtain permits for the festival, initially billed as a successor to the popular Starscape Festival, which had run for several years at Fort Armistead Park.* Following safety problems at the 2012 Starscape event, including overcrowding and drug overdoses, city officials told organizers they could no longer use Fort Armistead Park.
Since Moonrise has taken place, organizers have distanced it from the Starscape brand. Despite concerns over problems at similar festivals in other parts of the country, last year's inaugural Moonrise Festival at Pimlico went off largely without incident.
