FlowerMart rescheduled for September

Baltimore's FlowerMart, a rite of spring for more than 100 years, has been pushed back to late summer for 2015, organizers say.

The two-day festival, a showcase for blooming flowers, wide-brimmed hats and lemon sticks, will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 11 and 12 in Mount Vernon, centering on the corner of Charles and Monument streets.

Originally scheduled for May 1-2, this year's FlowerMart was

postponed

in the wake of violence and unrest following the April 19 death of

Freddie Gray

. The 25-year-old African-American man died of injuries sustained while in police custody.

Organizers had considered moving the FlowerMart to June, spokesman John Valentini Jr. said, but that would have caused a conflict with other festivals. They also considered the weekend of May 15, but "we couldn't plan it that quickly," he said.

Vendors will have until May 30 to decide whether they want to participate in FlowerMart on the new date, Valentini said. If any don't, he said, organizers will have time to seek out new vendors.

The first FlowerMart was held in Mount Vernon in 1911.
