Nov. 19-Dec. 22: 'A Civil War Christmas' at Center Stage (critic's pick)

It often seems as if we are destined to go on fighting the Civil War forever, one reason that artists continue to create work related to the conflict. A case in point is Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel's "A Civil War Christmas," which premiered last season in New York and will receive its Baltimore premiere from Center Stage. The play-with-music, set in Washington on a bleak Christmas Eve 1864, weaves together stories of people on both sides of the war, including President Lincoln and the former slave who became the first lady's celebrated dressmaker. Finding the holiday spirit isn't easy for these characters, given how long and horrid the war has been, but all is not bleak. "The hope of peace," one character says, "is sweeter than peace itself." "A Civil War Christmas" runs Nov. 19 to Dec. 22 at Center Stage, 700 N. Charles St. Call 410-332-0033 or go to -- Tim Smith
