Hae Jang Gook, aka Ox Blood Stew, at Jong Kak

Hae Jang Gook is a kind of stew enjoyed by many a hungover Korean (its formal name, "Haejangguk," translates as "soup to chase a hangover"). The soup's contents vary, but generally involve meat, vegetables, and broth -- all served piping hot. Jong Kak prepares Seoul-style Hae Jang Gook ($9.95), slowly cooking a beef bone until the tissue falls off, then adding napa cabbage, soybean sprouts and various other vegetables. Sounds good so far, right? Then comes the brown congealed bricks of ox blood. Yeah. Oh, and it's finished with a spicy broth.
