BSO brings back 'Hairspray' -- and John Waters

John Waters talks about his inspiration for the story and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performance of "Hairspray."

Edna Turnblad will be arnin' some more clothes and her likewise well-fed daughter, Tracy, will be trying out again for a spot on a TV dance show when the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra brings back a concert version of the hit musical "Hairspray" this week.

Three years ago, the BSO brightened things up with this vibrantly costumed, semistaged presentation, narrated by John Waters, writer and director of the 1988 film that starred Baltimore's own Divine as Edna and inspired the stage version 14 years later. The musical, in turn, became the basis of a 2007 Hollywood film.

Waters, whose original movie evoked 1962 Baltimore and centered around an attempt to integrate a dance show on local TV, will repeat the narrating duties for the BSO reprise. This turns out to be a "Hairspray"-flavored year for him. In December, the musical will be performed live on NBC.

"I'm thrilled that they're doing 'Hairspray,'" says Waters, just before heading off to Paris with some friends for a few days to celebrate his recent 70th birthday. "I'm not directly involved, but I want Justin Bieber to play Link [Larkin, the 'Hairspray' heartthrob]."

Bieber might not be in the cards, but the TV production does boast the likes of Harvey Fierstein (the original Edna on Broadway), Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short and Derek Hough. The BSO's "Hairspray" cast is nothing to sneeze at, either.
