Sheppard, who is considered a master of realism, based his newest work on a 16th-century woodcut. In the painting, Vesalius is dissecting a human corpse in the operating theater at the School of Medicine in Padua, Italy.

The artist said in the news release that he thinks Vesalius would feel right at home on the Baltimore campus.
