Modell Lyric sets theater, dance season

One of Santa's helpers, a man who tilts at windmills, and Toto, too, will be part of the 2013-2014 season of the Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric. One of the country's most distinguished dance companies, the Joffrey Ballet, is also scheduled.

Based on the hit film of the same name, "Elf" is a musical with a score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, a book by Thomas Meehan (his credits include "Hairspray") and Bob Martin.

The family show, which has been a presence at holiday time on Broadway, will play the Lyric Nov. 22 to Nov. 24. The plot follows the adventures of an orphan who winds up working with the other elves at the North Pole, figures out he's human, and heads to New York to find his father and, of course, what is invariably called the true spirit of Christmas.

"Man of La Mancha," the 1965 Broadway hit based on Cervantes and "Don Quixote," will stop at the Lyric March 14 and 15 as part of a national tour by Columbia Artists Theatricals, imparting its message of dreaming "The Impossible Dream."

The theater series concludes May 28 to June 1, 2014, with a new Andrew Lloyd Webber product, "The Wizard of Oz." It's based on the iconic 1934 film and incorporates the beloved music from that picture, including "Over the Rainbow."

Webber and lyricist Tim Rice have written extra songs, which means, among other things, that the witches now get their own numbers, unlike in the movie. The musical bowed in London in 2011; the Baltimore visit will be part of a North American tour of a production that opened late last year in Canada.

The Joffrey Ballet is slated to perform March 4 and 5 at the Lyric.

Other events on the season calendar include vocalist Sarah Brightman Sept. 20, jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall Oct. 19, saxophonist Dave Koz Dec. 5, and Mannheim Steamroller Dec. 12. (The Lyric Opera Baltimore season was announced earlier this month.)
