We're number 12!
Out of 20. Oh, well.
When Amazon.com announced its fifth annual list of the most well-read cities in America on Tuesday, Baltimore fell solidly in the middle.
According to a news release issued today by the retailing behemoth, Seattle topped the charts with the greatest number of book, magazine and newspaper sales per capita. (E-books were included in the tally.)
Portland, Ore., ranked second, while the residents of Las Vegas walked away from their slot machines long enough to place third.
Baltimore's wonky neighbor to the south, Washington, was in fifth place overall, but topped the charts for the sales of print books.
To create the list, Amazon looked at literary sales per capita in cities with at least 500,000 residents between April 2014 and April 2015.
Baltimore, which once boasted "the city that reads" via its park benches, came in just behind Charlotte, N.C. (no. 11) but just ahead of San Diego, Calif. (no. 13).
In seven cities, including Baltimore, "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn was the most frequently-purchased title.
