War of 1812 hero's pistol, spyglass, other items donated to museum

An antique pistol attached to a folding bayonet, a spyglass and the journal of the War of 1812 hero Joshua Barney are being donated to the Maryland Historical Society.

Society president Burt Kummerow announced Thursday that Barney's personal belongings, which also include four chests of correspondence, are being given to the public by Barney's descendants.

"My relatives and I strongly feel that these artifacts are part of American history and need to be shared with future generations," family member Anne Helm Galvin said in a news release.

Barney's most famous exploits occurred in 1814 when as commander of the legendary privateer Rossie, he disrupted the British shipping trade. The small, light boats, at home in the shallow waters of the Chesapeake Bay, pestered the British incessantly and became known as "the Mosquito Fleet."

The collection of his belongings is on display at the historical society as part of an exhibit called, "In Full Glory Reflected: Maryland in the War of 1812."
