The second New Music Gathering, described by its organizers as "an annual conference dedicated to the performance, production, promotion, support and creation of new concert music," will be held at the Peabody Institute, Jan. 7 to 9, 2016.
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director Marin Alsop will give the keynote speech.
In a statement, Peabody dean Fred Bronstein said the Gathering is "an exciting opportunity for Peabody and for Baltimore to welcome leading composers and performers from around the world" and "be immersed in the new ideas, provocative discussions, and compelling performances."
The New Music Gathering, founded by Lainie Fefferman, Daniel Felsenfeld, Mary Kouyoumdjian and Matt Marks, debuted last January in San Francisco. Their concept encompasses "concerts, lecture recitals, round-table discussions, talks, composer-performer 'speed dating,' and a 'therapy room' for consultations with industry professionals.
"When we met to plot this subsequent year of the annual event, Baltimore, with its vivid musical life, stood out as a logical and excellent next destination," organizers said in a press release.
The theme of the 2016 session will be "communities -- big and small, global or local, online or in the flesh."
If you want to pitch an idea/performance/whatever, New Music Gathering 2016 is accepting "proposals from all musical walks of life from around the world (composers, performers, scholars, arts administrators, publishers, critics, promoters, inventors, creators, dreamers, and beyond)." The online application is free. Deadline in May 17.
