National Recording Registry adds Joan Tower's 'Fanfares' conducted by Marin Alsop

CD cover of "Fanfares for the Uncommon Woman" by Joan Tower

Marin Alsop is on a roll this week.

The Baltimore Symphony music director received Harvard University's Luise Vosgerchian Teaching Award on Tuesday "for her innovative approach to programming and for her deep commitment to education and to the development of audiences of all ages."

The next day, Alsop's name turned up on the list of entries selected by the Library of Congress for its annual National Recording Registry -- "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" recordings that are at least 10 years old.

Among the 25 recordings chosen for the 2014 registry, announced Wednesday, is a Koch International Classics release from 1999: "Fanfares for the Uncommon Woman" composed by Joan Tower, performed by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Alsop.

This classical item has some interesting company on the list, which encompasses the likes of The Doors, Joan Baez, Radiohead, Sly and the Family Stone, the original cast album of Cole Porter's "Kiss Me, Kate," Sesame Street's "All Time Platinum Favorites" (including "Bein' Green" and "Rubber Duckie"), Agnes Moorehead's radio broadcast of "Sorry, Wrong Number" on the radio show "Suspense," and wax cylinder recordings of world music from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
