The Baltimore Symphony will once again provide diversions during the long, hot month of July. Here's the lowdown for the orchestra's 2015 summer season:
As usual, the action starts with a Fourth of July salute at Oregon Ridge. These will be followed by an evening of comedy and music at Meyerhoff Hall and two greatest-hits classical programs at Meyerhoff and Strathmore.
The BSO's fast-rising assistant conductor Nicholas Hersh will be on the podium for the Star-Spangled Spectacular outdoors at Oregon Ridge Park on July 3 and July 4. Count on traditional fare by Sousa and Tchaikovsky (America's adapted patriotic favorite, the "1812 Overture"), along with an account of the National Anthem featuring a winner of the BSO's annual "O, Say Can You Sing?" contest.
Seth MacFarlane, creator of the TV's "Family Guy, will do his funny stuff and also sing pop standards on July 16. (Tickets go on sale to the public March 30, to subscribers and donors March 27.)
BSO concertmaster Jonathan Carney will be soloist and leader in performances of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" on a program that includes portions of Handel's "Water Music" July 23 (Strathmore) and July 24 (Meyerhoff).
Conducted by Tito Muñoz, the BSO will deliver Dvorak's "New World" Symphony and, with soloist Ariel Horowitz, Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto July 30 (Strathmore) and July 31 (Meyerhoff).
