Chadwick Elementary wins national award

Chadwick Elementary School in Woodlawn is one of only four public schools in the nation to be honored with an award by the Education Trust, an education advocacy group based in Washington.

The award is given to schools that are successful in educating a diverse population to the same standards of achievement as schools with higher income students. Chadwick, the Trust said in a statement, has a mix of immigrants from Africa, Southeast Asia and Central America as well as African-Americans.

Last year, more than 95 percent of its students passed the Maryland School Assessments in both reading and math at every grade level. In addition, large numbers of Chadwick students scored in the advanced category.  For instance, 95 percent of its fifth-graders scored in the advanced category in reading.

Chadwick, which has a large number of students who qualify for subsidized lunches, was named a National Blue Ribbon School last month. The school will receive the award on Thursday at the Education Trust's conference in Baltimore.
