Several school systems in the Baltimore area opened the school year Monday.
Schools in Howard and Baltimore counties are opening today, and in Anne Arundel, school is in session for grades one through five as well as grades six and nine. Other grades will start tomorrow in Arundel.
Also in Arundel, six schools are starting a day late because of ongoing construction projects: Crofton Elementary, Lothian Elementary, Mills-Parole Elementary, Magothy River Middle, Southern Middle and the Mary Moss at J. Albert Adams Academy.
Although Baltimore County is staring today, the system is implementing a staggered entrance for kindergarten and full-day prekindergarten.over several days, from Aug. 26-28.
In Baltimore County, officials are launching the school year with a tour of several schools. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, Schools Superintendent S. Dallas Dance and members of the Baltimore County Board of Education were scheduled to drop by Lansdowne High School early Monday, then also visit Dundalk Middle School, Middle River Middle School, Sparks Elementary School and Lyons Mill Elementary School -- a new school in the county.
Police are reminding residents to be aware of the start of the school year and remember rules for stopping for school buses as they children are picked up. Several jurisdictions are stepping up enforcement patrols.
Harford County public schools are opening Aug. 27 for kindergarten through the 12th grade, and Aug. 31 for pre-kindergarten.
Carroll County and Baltimore City schools open Aug. 31.
