When does school start in Maryland in 2018?

The summer days are waning, and notebooks and binders are flying off shelves: It’s back-to-school season in Maryland.

Since Gov. Larry Hogan signed an executive order in 2016 ordering public schools to start classes after Labor Day, there’s not much variation in start date for each district. But some private schools, colleges and universities are heading back sooner. Here’s a rundown of start dates for the 2018-19 school year.


Public K-12

» Anne Arundel County Public Schools: Grades 1-5, 6 and 9 head back on Tuesday, Sept. 4; grades 7-8 and 10-12 start Sept. 5.; full-day kindergarten and pre-K begins Sept. 11; and half-day kindergartners start Sept. 12.

» Baltimore City Public Schools: Most schools start Tuesday, Sept. 4. A handful received approval for an earlier or later start — find a list here.


» Baltimore County Public Schools: Tuesday, Sept. 4.

» Carroll County Public Schools: Tuesday, Sept. 4.

After a larger-than-expected number of students accepted a place at the university, Maryland had to find an extra 350 spaces on its College Park campus.

» Harford County Public Schools: Most students start Tuesday, Sept. 4; pre-k starts Sept. 6.

» Howard County Public Schools: Most students start Tuesday, Sept. 4; pre-k and Regional Early Childhood Centers begin Sept. 6.

The quick succession of ribbon-cutting ceremonies represent years of work and hundreds of millions of dollars spent under the 21st Century School Buildings Program, which will eventually bring up to 28 modernized school buildings to the city.
